Servant | Advocate | Leader

As the mother of five children and as a previous member and president of the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees, I understand that a quality education is vital to help every child across Senate District 26 reach their full potential and thrive.

Priorities:

Public Funding for Public Schools: There have been recent efforts in the state legislature to divert public funds to private schools.  I will work to advance policies that stifle the use of public funds for private schools and advocate for policies that increase funding for public school districts.

Pay Raises for Teachers and Funding for Student Support Services: Mississippi has the lowest average teacher salary in the nation.  I will work alongside our educators to advance legislation that increases teacher pay, and advocate for and support legislation that increases funding for student support services such as mental health services, tutoring services, nutrition services, and housing services.

Affordable College Education: An affordable college education means expanding affordability for the young people in Senate District 26 that will attend 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities.  By increasing state aid and scholarship programs, we can increase the number of people in Senate District 26 that are learning skilled trades at community colleges and those that will be the small business owners and doctors in our community.  I will work with our community partners and other members of the legislature to enhance this priority.

Too often, our communities are left without the resources that adequately address safety.  As your state senator, I will advocate for programs and introduce legislation that puts community safety first by focusing on re-entry, community spaces, and addressing the root causes of crime.

Priorities:

Effective Re-Entry Programs: Recidivism, meaning formerly incarcerated people who reoffend, can be reduced in Mississippi.  It can be reduced by fostering re-entry programs that take a holistic approach to a successful transition.  I will advocate for programs that increase funding for transitional housing and fight to repeal outdated policies and rules that place barriers to employment.

Funding for Community Spaces: Research has shown that high levels of social interaction through the creation of community spaces such as parks, community centers, and green spaces reduce crime.  Senate District 26 is home to a number of community spaces that can stimulate community engagement and sponsor programming tailored to the youth and others.  I will work through the State’s annual appropriation process to increase funding for our community spaces.

Addressing the Root Causes of Crime: I will work to bring state investments to Senate District 26 that address crime prevention, mental health, and addiction.  For decades, the answer to crime has been addressing or criminalizing the aftermath.  I will stand with members of law enforcement, community advocates, and others who are working to alleviate crime in our communities before it happens.

Mississippi has some of the worst health outcomes in the nation.  This trend can be reversed if investments in healthcare are made a priority.  I view quality healthcare as a right, not a privilege, and I believe that every person in Senate District 26 is worthy of having access to healthcare from the womb to the tomb.

Priorities:

Increasing Insured Rate and Decreasing Cost: Recent actions by the U.S. Congress through the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill will cut Medicaid and increase the uninsured rate.  Mississippi must be proactive in allocating resources to healthcare and explore new models for healthcare funding that will ensure that the most vulnerable and impoverished Mississippians keep or gain coverage, not lose it. I will advocate for policies that protect the health of the people in Senate District 26.

Funding for Maternal Health: Mississippi has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the nation.  I will work with healthcare advocates and other members of the legislature to expand prenatal and postpartum healthcare services for women in Senate District 26 and across the state.  This will include increased state funding for hospitals and clinics that provide critical prenatal and postpartum services.

Reproductive Health: Over the past several years, Mississippi has led the charge to restrict access to reproductive health services.  The U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2022 to overturn Roe v. Wade jeopardizes the ability of many women to find life-saving reproductive healthcare services.  I will advocate for reproductive healthcare as your senator, such as ensuring the accessibility of contraception.

Access to Mental Health Services: With the uncertainty of federal funding for critical services like mental health, it is more important than ever that the state takes action to support mental health services.  I will support efforts to maintain and expand access to mental and behavioral health programs administered by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health and regional community mental health centers.

For years, I worked as a family and bankruptcy attorney.  I have seen firsthand the financial and economic hardships that many Mississippians face.  As your senator, I will work each day to help pass legislation that will bring financial stability and upward mobility to our families.

Priorities:

Work to Repeal Regressive State Taxes: Regressive state tax policies, like the grocery tax, place an unfair burden on poor and working-class families.  Families that are already struggling to make ends meet are met at the grocery store by a tax that has not produced a return on investment.  Other regressive policies like the elimination of the state income tax will also disproportionately impact poor and working-class families through less funding for services like education and healthcare.  I will push for policies that reverse regressive state policies and replace them with a progressive tax system that ensures fairness in our tax code.

Funding for Economic Development Projects: Investments in economic development often start with public infrastructure.  Public infrastructure, like good roads and water systems, is essential and foundational to spur economic growth.  I will be a voice for Senate District 26 to bring state dollars that fund our roads, bridges, water, and sewer systems.

Advocating for Small Businesses: In rural and urban communities across America, small businesses are one of the largest employers, and the presence of small businesses is a major indicator of the economic health of a community.  We need our small businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive.  As your senator, I will be intentional about supporting policies that foster small business growth and the development of new entrepreneurs.

Quality and Affordable Housing: I will push for policies and programs that make housing more affordable, expand ownership opportunities, and support unhoused individuals.  We can work towards more quality and affordable housing by making a concerted effort to invest in state housing programs.
